sierra leone: Hannah's Story

Hannah Conteh, 21 years old, is dumped in the accident and emergency room like a bag of rubbish. The Freetown Hospital obstetrician had referred her to “Connaugh Hospital”, the best hospital government hospital in Freetown, but as soon as the doctors saw her there, without any examination they sent her to the “EMERGENCY Surgical Centre”. A month earlier she had undergone an illegal abortion, which was carried out without any anaesthesia by a hospital cleaner at the military hospital. An abortion in a public hospital costs between 150,000 and 200,000 Leones (the equivalent of approximately €40-€50), the cleaner had only requested 50,000 Leones.Soon after the intervention she started feeling ill and was taken to the Obstetrics Hospital, where she remained for three weeks without any treatment or assistance.Scraping together the money necessary for a check-up of the uterus under anaesthesia the surgeon noted many lacerations in the uterus that had also spread to the intestine. The space between diagnosis and discharge was short. We immediately operated to fix the lacerations of the small intestine and remove the right colon, irrevocably damaged by the instruments used to provoke the abortion. The cleaner had already been involved in a similar case in 2002: the woman died, yet he is able to continue supplementing his wage in this manner in blissful indifference. We made a complaint against him to the director of the Military Hospital, but we do not believe that any action will be taken.
